Founded in December 1973, Eagle Insurance Limited commenced operations in January 1974. As one of Mauritius’ leading insurance providers, we offer comprehensive insurance solutions across all sectors of the economy. Our unique market position enables us to deliver substantial benefits to our customers, backed by extensive expertise and experience for ultimate peace of mind.
We serve both individual and corporate markets, offering a wide range of short-term insurance products including Car, Home, Travel, Personal, Accident, Health, Engineering, and Boat insurance. Our diverse customer base ranges from private individuals to SMEs and large corporations. Our financial stability is reinforced by a strong capital base, strong reinsurance arrangements, and expert investment management.
Shareholding Profile
We began as a joint venture between IBL LTD (80%), one of the largest groups in Mauritius, and South African Eagle Insurance Co Ltd, now known as Bryte Insurance Company Limited (20%).
Listed on the Official Market of the Stock Exchange of Mauritius in 1993, the shareholding profile changed to 60% equity for IBL Ltd. The remaining 40% is held by HWIC Asia Fund (39.12%) and the public (0.88%).

In 1996, we acquired a 15% stake in H.Savy Insurance Co. Ltd based in Seychelles, which was later increased to 20% in 2005. We also hold a stake in the shareholding of Specialty Risk Solutions Limited and more recently in Medscheme (Mtius) Limited.

1973
- Creation of Mauritian Eagle Insurance (MEI), located at Queen Street, Port Louis,with a subscribed capital of Rs 1M, held by IBL (80%) and South African Eagle(20%). Initiative led by Colin Hare (IBL) and Fred Haslett (South African Eagle).
1974
- Start of operations.
- Mike Hepburn appointed as the first General Manager.
1975
- Relocation to new premises at Dr Ferrière Street, Port Louis.
1979
- Guy Leroux appointed General Manager
1991
- Launch of the life insurance product line.
1993
- Listed on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius, with 25% equity subscribed by the public.
- Celebration of the company’s 20th anniversary at La Pirogue Hotel.
1994
- Gross premium exceeds Rs 100M.
1996
- Acquisition of a 15% stake in H. Savy Insurance Company Limited (Seychelles)

- Relocation to new offices at Caudan, Port Louis.
2001

- First insurance company in Mauritius to obtain ISO 9001:2000 certification.
- Opening of Rodrigues branch (later closed after two years due to limited operational success).

- 30th anniversary celebrations held at Hilton Hotel.

- Eric Venpin appointed Managing Director
- Increase in stake in H. Savy Insurance Company Limited to 20%

- Gross premium reaches Rs 500M.
- First company in the Indian Ocean region to achieve ISO 27001:2005 certification.

- Strengthening of life insurance operations with the incorporation of Mauritian Eagle Life Co. Ltd.

- Andre Chung Shui appointed Managing Director.
2012
- Achieves ISO 20000-1:2011 certification, once again a first in the Indian Ocean insurance sector.

- Shareholding in Mauritian Eagle Leasing Co. Ltd reduced to 13%.

- Listed on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius Sustainability Index (SEMSI).
